Colourful madder root

madder root soap towel

You might be wondering why Satin Sunrise Apple Cider Vinegar Soap and an Eco Leaf Printed Cotton are in the same photo?

Well, the wonderful Madder plant – in particular the root, is used to provide the gorgeous deep pink colour in the Satin Sunrise soap and the subdued pink in the Eco Leaf Printed Cotton. When using madder root for material dying it can range from deep red to orange to pink. The colour dramatically changes just by altering the pH in the water by using vinegar (acidic) or baking soda (alkaline). In the Eco Leaf Printed Cotton I’ve used vinegar so the colours are a more muted pink.

Surprisingly, the madder root used in the Satin Sunrise Apple Cider Vinegar Soap retains its original colour even after lye is added.

I love using one plant in different ways to see the magic that can happen, and this surely didn’t disappoint me.
