This workshop will show you the beauty and uniqueness of nature using leaves. No two leaves are alike and the tannin levels in the leaves are also different. Leaves that produced a certain intensity of colour this year, maybe slightly different next year based on their surrounding environment, the weather, soil, humidity, dryness, etc. Although their properties may change, they will always have tannins so they will always be capable of producing dye. Interestingly, fresh or dried leaves can both be used with no difference in the finished product.

What is Eco Printing?

Eco Printing has been around for years. It’s a form of dying where the natural colours from the plant material, in this case, leaves, are transferred to the fabric via steaming or boiling. The natural tannins in the leaves will release their dye when a mordant such as iron is added. The iron will pull the dye out of the leaves thus allowing it to bond to the fibres. There are two types of natural fibres:

Animal (protein) fibres = wool, silk

Plant (cellulose) fibres = cotton, linen, hemp

In this workshop, we are using Plant (cellulose) fibres = 100% COTTON

We will have 2 cotton tea towels scoured (prepares the cellulose fibres for the eco leaf printing), ready for you to begin the eco leaf printing process.

During our 3-hour workshop, you will receive all materials and instructions necessary to complete 2, 100% cotton tea towels. Your finished printed design will be uniquely your own, derived by nature.

You will take a bundle home with you. The next day, you will unwrap the parcel and be amazed. It is like Christmas.

NOTE: Please bring a towel to wrap the bundle in to keep it warm until the next morning.
